We'll save you the suspense and say no, your hot tub will not always look glamorous, and yes, you have to maintain it through regular cleaning.  There are times, however, when maintenance slacks off for some reason. You may be off on a vacation, or you may have been too busy to clean off the scum. By this time, it would be much tougher to get rid of hot tub algae.

    Preventive measures

The best solution here is a measure of prevention. This is to chlorinate your tub regularly to keep the algae at bay.

Getting rid of the hot tub algae

Chlorinating regularly has its consequences. You may end up suffering because of all the chlorine used to clean your tub. You could feel stings on your skin because of too much chemicals used in cleaning your hot tub. The problem is when you lay off the chlorine, algae may grow and fester. To clean off the algae, you need a sponge and a nonabrasive cleanser. Make use of a disinfectant as well. Wipe off all the scum as thoroughly as you can and then check the filter for cleanliness. The filter basket should be freed of residue and dirt at least once a week. Treat the water’s PH as well. You do not have much of a choice with chlorine, however. You need to regularly use it to prevent algae from coming back. What you can do is simply check if you are putting in just the right amount. Have your tub covered when not being used so that it will not be exposed to more dirt.

It is still best to make use of preventive measures. This way, you always have a clean hot tub available. In case some algae have managed to grow, you can apply the thorough cleansing method, complete with disinfectant, chlorine, sponge, cleanser, and a willing pair of hands.
